Midas Hawaii, Hawaii Foodbank Want to ‘Drive Out Hunger'

Public Invited to Join The Cause

JOIN THE CAUSE

In 2012, 1 in 6 Americans lived in food insecure households, meaning they didn't know where their next meal was coming from. Midas stores across the country are stepping up to the empty plate to assist food banks in their community and those in need through the "Drive Out Hunger" initiative. Locally, Midas Hawaii is partnering with the Hawaii Foodbank--who serves 1 in 5 islanders each year--to bring foods, funds and hands-on assistance to hunger relief efforts here at home.

"Midas Hawaii has worked with the Hawaii Foodbank for many years because we believe it's important to give back to the community that supports your business," said Bob Pereira, President and Owner of Midas Hawaii. "The Hawaii Foodbank has a very difficult task but does an amazing job by distributing over 12.4 million pounds of food each year to nearly 287,000 islanders. We are happy to do whatever we can to support their efforts."

The top five most needed foods include:

Canned meats (tuna, SPAM, Vienna Sausage)
Canned meals (spaghetti, beef stew)
Canned fruits
Canned vegetables
Rice

DRIVE OUT HUNGER TOUR / SCHEDULE

Drive Out Hunger runs from August 22 through December 12 and coincides with the touring, 12-foot Midas Golden Hand. Stop by the Midas Hawaii location displaying the Golden Hand and receive a coupon for $1 off a safety check per canned good donated (up to $5 per safety check). Donations can be made anytime during the initiative at collection bins in Midas Hawaii locations on Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii Island. (Hawaii Island donations will support The Food Basket.)

Oct. 26-Nov. 7 - Lihue Midas, Kauai
Nov. 16-28 - Kailua-Kona Midas, Hawaii Island
Nov. 30-Dec. 12 - Hilo Midas, Hawaii Island

KICK OFF EVENT

The public is invited to bring their canned good donations to the Drive Out Hunger Kickoff event on Saturday, August 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Midas Hawaii's Waipahu location (94-709 Farrington Hwy.) and enjoy food, drinks, games and prizes.
